JANUARY TDM - WINTER DREAMS
Welcome to the Undying Court's January Test Drive Meme! This post also functions as the January Event for existing characters, and continues the Winter Season, led by the Blue Court.
New characters may handwave or backdate the previous season's arrival prompt should they wish to, but you may otherwise assume they've been here the whole time! Additionally, all TDM threads can be taken as in-game canon if desired. And remember that apps open February 3-7, with invites opening on January 28, and reserves not long after!
Note that this post will contain: violence, enthrallment, torture, slavery, horror and potentially sexual content. Dreams come in many forms, after all.
This event also features another chance for characters to submit Regains, so make sure to submit after you've posted your top-level or reply to someone else's dream. For characters both new and old, feel free to brush up on the Premise, Vampire Powers, and head over to the FAQ/Game Info page if you have any questions!

ONCE UPON A DREAM
A quiet falls over the Castle as a new day begins to break. As with every morning, this is a time when vampires must retreat to avoid the rays of the sun, pulling heavy curtains around their beds and windows to block out any light. However, this particular morning is abnormally quiet as the whole of the Castle seems to fall asleep all at once, and all together. After this enchanted sleep, and for the the next thirty days, the Castle's residents will start to experience strange phenomena within their dreams.
During this period, dreams become more vivid, so realistic it feels like the dreamer is awake. Dreamers can pass into each other's dreams without meaning to. Some of these dreams are in fact memories--either those from the lives the characters have lived in the Castle and the outlying lands, or the strange memories they've begun to gain back.
But be careful! For what starts as a regular memory might start to warp into something new. If you're lucky, it'll be something positive, like a dream of a home you've always wanted. But if you're unlucky, the memory might twist and turn into a nightmare, catching you in it and turning your worst fears against you.
Each nightfall, everyone will wake and return to normal. Or at least, most people will.
[Note: Any current characters who participate in the dream event by creating a top level or tagging someone else at least once in this prompt may be rewarded with a free impactful memory, which may be used in the dreamscape. Don't forget to submit for your Regains!]

A NIGHTMARISH CURSE
It turns out that not everyone wakes up. Those who stay in nightmares for too long may find themselves cursed, and unable to wake up. At first, the curse appears no different from regular sleep. But a few hours in the victim will start screaming uncontrollably. No touch will wake them, no amount of calling their name will break the spell. After too long, the victim will start to bleed, slowly at first, and then more and more as they remain afflicted. A victim left unattended will bleed out and die.
The Council works quickly to step in. Kashire (who is looking rather frayed this season) delivers the news that there's no need to panic, but everyone will need to do their part in locating and curing victims. In fact, the youngbloods seem to be taking this as the perfect opportunity for a teaching moment, and students are expected to try and find a cure with the skills that match their Court. Novices and youngbloods alike are encouraged to try and help lift the curse from anyone they can. (Get creative! Blood heals many wounds...) Any victims that have progressed too far will need to be seen to by Revar.
The nightmare curse, however, can spread quickly. Anyone who enters the nightmare of a victim will fall victim to the curse. Additionally, any attempt to reach out to the mind of a curse victim will also spread the curse. With the combined efforts of the students and teachers, the curse can be completely put out. But it will take time and care to ensure everyone is found in time, and cured safely.

ANYWAY, WINTER GAMES!
But a few curses aren't going to stop the Blue Court from making sure everyone has a good time. The days might be short, and weighed down by the threats of nightmares, but winter has hit Castle Courtsheart in full force, and the long nights and snow-covered grounds make for an excellent backdrop to the Inter-Court Winter Games!
There isn't really a reward for the winning house besides bragging rights and maybe a trophy that doubles as a chalice, but youngbloods and novices alike are invited to join in the festivities and compete against one another in the spirit of glory and the chance to lord over your Court's superiority. Even Council members and mature vampires of each court seem to enjoy cheering on their respective teams from the stands. Everything is fine! Forget your troubles and go play in the snow.
What kind of sports do vampires play? Feel free to get creative, but here are some examples:

Even Council members and mature vampires of each court seem to enjoy cheering on their respective teams from the stands. Everything is fine! Forget your troubles and go play in the snow.
What kind of sports do vampires play? Feel free to get creative, but here are some examples:
- Thrall-Curling: Since vampiric strength proves to be a little too much for this sport otherwise, teams of novices (or youngbloods) of the same Court can team up to gently compel their thralls to play the thrilling sport of curling. Coax that stone across the ice with care, and take out the opposing team! Or, well, the thralls will do that, assuming they're guided well. Try not to break them. (The thralls, that is.)
- Figure skating: Practicing your pirouettes? For a vampire, a quadruple-axel is hardly worth breaking a sweat over. Favored for its beauty and almost seductive grace, the figure skating competition will be scored and judged by a multi-court panel. Participants might get extra points for incorporating bladework and masking into their sets, so these performances are sure to wow the judges.
- Ice Hockey: Yes, the high-contact sport transcends time and space, but vampires don't need silly things like helmets or padded safety gear. Don your court's colors and hit the ice to toss the puck around and score as many points against the opposing team as you can before the time runs out. Violence is encouraged! Everyone likes to see a bit of blood on the ice this time of year. (Shadowstepping is considered cheating, but only if you get caught.)
CLASS NOTES
Other notable happenings for the early winter season include:
- Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and maybe it's time to find or make gifts for that special blood claim in your life. This season blood jewelry is the hot ticket item. These are pieces made from precious metal and glass, which hold the blood of a vampire in them. Carry a lover's blood to show how much you love them, or carry your own to force down the throat of your enemies so you can influence them.
- Whispers around school start to say that Black Court lost a novice this month. Not murder this time! He simply unmade himself trying to mistwalk. Eh, these things happen.
- As a result of a tie in last month's pumpkin carving contest, members of the Black and Red Courts will find small packages outside their doors. They are gifted silver letter openers, with the handle inlaid with pumpkins and leaves, and a note from Revar with a little drawing of a pumpkin and their signature. How nice!
- Lady Whisperfangs is quiet for now, but her time is yet to come... This month's check-in will have a field to submit gossip about your characters! Vampires do so love their drama.
Once again, characters are free to talk to the NPCs as well: Revar & Kashire. For any questions regarding this month's prompts, please comment in the Plotting Post. For general game questions, please check the FAQ/Game Info. In the meantime, remember to submit your Regains for this month's free reward, and keep an eye out for our AC Check-in next week, starting on January 25-31.

Actually... It's not. It's about this curse. I've been helping with my court, but I was hoping that there would be some unique insights about this from your expertise.
[ Especially when she came here after looking over some of the newest affected that were also novices. Theoretically, it was risky and she would probably fall to the curse later. There were a lot of theories, though. ]
Though I think it might start sounding like pretty advanced class questions if I didn't say that it's for handling the curse first.
no subject
My expertise? Magical ailments are before my time.
[ But of course, he'll be damned if he doesn't offer something, the Gold Court doesn't just quit. ]
What questions do you have? If they are about enthrallment, the method can only be learned by those with golden blood, so I cannot avail you with answers.
no subject
[ But it sounds like he was willing to discuss, so she'll go in to take a seat as well, also pulling out her notes. ]
The way things are spreading, it reminded me of how an illness swept over one of the villages near my home. No one knew what was causing it, so it just spread to everyone very quickly. Except those that are affected by the curse aren't going anywhere during the evenings. When everyone's sleeping, though... It's been weird, right?
[ She's dancing around it all. ]
The shortest and easiest way to ask, without nuance or full explanation, is if one can make something like a compulsion spread to those that go into the compelled person's mind. Is that really a magical ailment, or something that could potentially be thought up?
no subject
[ He jots down a few more numbers. He's stalling, really. He can see where she's going with this. ]
A mature vampire of the Gold Court would be able to share dreams as we have been this month, but they would be unable to compel the bodies of the afflicted to scream until they are exsanguinated. A continued affliction would fall nearer to enthrallment, and vampires are not capable of being enthralled.
[ He looks directly at her, to make his point as clear as he can. ]
Were the Gold Court behind this affliction, I would be the first to see that a punishment is carried out. But the incident of compelled sleep that began with our shared dreams, as well as the physical nature of the ailment combined, are what have led to myself and those of the Council to deem this to be a magical ailment. A curse.
no subject
[ It's too grand a scale, and that's how she felt back when telling him of the sensations felt from the bonfire. Was that meant to be a magical ailment as well, then?
It takes a moment to search for the bit of charcoal that was in her notebook, having probably slipped out into the bag. After dipping into it an elbow deep, she finally pulls out the charcoal to write down and at least confirm those things. It was a nice mix of black leather, silver and a hunter green that matched the clothes she was wearing, still holding the appearance as it stayed around her shoulder and in her lap. ]
So we're back to you not knowing about magical ailments, and Revar saying nothing like this has happened in about a hundred years... Yet there's so many books taken out, I can't find anything about curses or even if there's been projects between Gold and Silver courts that could help.

Dream a Little Dream
Then the thralls are speaking and they look strikingly similar to Xenk that he finds himself wide eyed and curious. Was... was this Xenk's dream? Was he the child that he just saw dart across the court yard? Were his parents thralls? He feels a lot like he's trespassing now.
But more importantly - he finds himself closer all the sudden - was that child Xenk giggling? How was he such a cute kid? What the actual fuck.
When he gets shushed and waved over, Kirk finds himself putting a finger to his own lips playfully before ducking down in the hiding spot with the boy. No reason not to play along really.]
Well, we can't have you getting caught then.
[He speaks softly to not get overheard because the thralls were most definitely not playing hide and seek so much as Xenk was playing it and the poor thralls were trying to find him... but he suppose this was the basic same principal.]
no subject
Right! Shhh.
[ Xenk pokes his head out from behind one of the gargoyles, moving on to the next one and waving for Kirk to follow. He answers in a whisper: ]
As long as they catch me before sunset, they don't get in trouble! This way I still get to play with them.
[ He smiles, forced but almost wanting to believe it. Kids deal with terrible things in the strangest ways. And Xenk really does seem to enjoy this, even if his beleaguered parents keep calling for him. ]
"Master Xenk!"
no subject
But that forced smile, yeah this was fucked up. "Playing" his his thrall parents while-- while what? He thinks he's already piecing this together, ("master" "sunset" thrall parents...) but--]
Oh? [He whispers back, he gives Xenk a sneaky smile.]
What happens at sunset?
no subject
Uncle Tam wakes up at sunset... I'm supposed to call him Father now, but I...
[ Xenk's mother appears around the corner, her hands on her hips. ]
"Honestly, Master Xenk. You know what will happen if you fall asleep during your lessons again. Your friend here needs to go. If -- If he finds out, your --"
[ Her words are labored, the compulsion and commands keeping her from speaking freely. The man who looks so much like Xenk walks up behind her, setting a hand on her shoulder. Young Xenk only groans dramatically, as if this is just normal for him. ]
Alright, alright, I'll go... I just. [ He looks back down, holding his arms around himself. His parents, for that's clearly what they are, can't seem to approach him. Xenk knows it too, his voice strained. ] I have so many lessons now... I never get to see you anymore.
no subject
Crap, and now he got them caught by Xenk's mother. Even Kirk looks a little chastised by this, ducking his head a little like he was the one being scolded. But how Xenk acts like this is normal, like his parents being thralled and unable to speak to him freely, unable to acknowledge that they are his parents..
And the fact Xenk just wants to play with his parents...
Reaching forward, he takes one of Xenk's hands in his own and squeezes it reassuringly. He can't find the words right now, but he wasn't going anywhere.]

The Dreaded Eye Contact Trap.
On the one hand, Yasuho is a very good student. She pays attention! She studies! She does her best, and you know what, her best actually amounts to something! ...Which, in Gold, is to be expected. That pressure is on.
Still, second season she may be, but one never gets rid of the single fear of The Eye Contact Trap. It's a testament to her practice that she manages to almost ditch the look of a deer in the headlights.
Almost.
The book in her hands closes with an audible snap.] Uh-
[No, shoot, no uhs Yasuho, ugh- to say that she's still feeling a bit thrown off by her earlier experience with being cursed, would be putting it lightly.] Of course!
[...she says, while wishing she were anywhere else.] It would be good for me to practice this after all...
[It is rapidly occurring to her that she knows next to nothing about curling. Oh no!]
no subject
Excellent. The compulsion must be done gently in order to achieve the desired result.
[ He is so excited about sports. Don't worry, Yasuho, he can tell she has no idea what she's agreed to. ]
Do you understand the rules of curling?
no subject
Gentle...I can do that, [she breathes, nodding more to herself than anything. It doesn't quite keep her from wincing, however.]
Not at all...I didn't see much snow where I grew up, let alone ice. Most of these sports are completely new.
no subject
It is simple. The purpose of the game is to slide the stone across the ice, towards the target on the other side. Points are accrued based on the proximity to the center of the target, however the opposing team may attempt to keep the other team's rock away from the center as well.
[ It does also involve sweeping in front of the stone over and over to make sure it slides at the exact right speed. It's so weird. ]
no subject
So I need to focus first on the throw, and then on two with the broom...
[The gears, they are turning.] Watching them now, they're not allowed to interfere directly with the other team, right?
[A rock hitting a rock, that's fair game, but best she can see there's no taking a broom over to slow someone else down.]

He peers into the novice room, sees Xenk bleeding on the ground, and immediately trips over himself trying to back out.]
Afh- fhf- whuh-
[He’s- got the wrong room. That must be it. Xenk is- HEY WAIT A MINUTE. IS XENK IN HIS HEAD AGAIN. IS THIS GOLD COURT MACHINATIONS.]
(ooc: I was thinking that Elias wakes up quickly and then sends Xenk a letter like “are you messing with my dreams? Oh it’s a curse… this is awkward”- but if you wanna play out a dream encounter let me know and have Xenk stop Elias from leaving!)
no subject
Xenk groans from where he's collapsed on the ground. Bleeding out will no doubt wake him soon, and in the haze of the dream, he's both his human age, yet recalls Elias' voice with certain clarity.
Perhaps he deserves this, Xenk thinks, laying facedown on the floor, in a puddle of too-red blood. Szass Tam had never hurt him like this. The torture was never so physical, and yet... Xenk groans uselessly all the same. He's too human, his stoicism more a mask than true at this age.
The fact is this hurts and in the real world he's no doubt screaming. He might be able to pull himself out of it if he dies here, but he's human and stupid. He wants to live. ]
Help...
no subject
Do you need help...?
[Also, sorry for failing all his basic comprehension rolls. It's like Xenk's presence has stunned him out of all his braincells.]
…uh.
[He figures out eventually that obviously, Xenk needs help. Elias shuffles into the room and gets confused again at how red the blood is (it might be a Gold Court thing in general, he forgets that his old masters can be once mortal), but decides not to think too hard about it.]
I can heal…I think…
[He’ll try it, putting his hands tentatively on Xenk’s… back. Just to see if Xenk can respond to his healing.]
no subject
I'm sorry... My maker should...
[ His voice is strained. His maker should be there. His maker should heal him. Makers are supposed to care for their novices, not abandon them. He looks up at Elias as he begins to heal him. Brown eyes meet silver, but recognition never quite dawns on him. ]
You feel familiar...
[ Who was he? A silver court vampire? Xenk doesn't know many of those. He'd kept to himself through his undying seasons, made friends with his fellow gold novices but. There was someone in Silver, wasn't there? His own novices wouldn't be Silver.
Xenk's breaths come a little easier as Elias' healing does the trick. It shouldn't -- a wound of that size would incapacitate even a third season novice, but this being a dream, it doesn't seem to matter. He tries to stand but falls to his knees again, the puddle of blood beneath him still bright, human red. ]

IIIB omg math prompt
But when he peers into his office, his gaze falls to the abacus.
Oh.
He stares at it for several moments, silent, before looking up at Xenk's expression. The guy doesn't look happy to be doing those calculations.]
... It must be taking forever to use that fucking thing.
no subject
He looks up from his work only when Yuri speaks up. He's that engrossed. ]
Yes, it is a time-consuming task.
[ He doesn't specifically say why he's doing these calculations, but it must be important enough that he doesn't bother engaging with Yuri for more than that, simply gets back to it... He's not exactly chatty on a good day, but he's not usually this intense when it comes to math, I promise. ]
no subject
It doesn't look too bad, in his opinion. That's why, after a beat, he speaks up again.]
If you don't wanna be here until the sun comes up, I can do it for you.
[Which is probably an absurd offer, but it'd free Xenk up to look over his list and he's confident that he should be able to get it done in a fraction of the time it'd take for someone using an abacus. There are a lot of subjects he's good at, but far and away math has always been his best one.]
no subject
If you wish to attempt it, then you are free to.
[ He hands over his notes; the number of thralls, an estimate of the average "value" of a thrall in terms of how much blood is consumed in the castle... Xenk has been trying to calculate if it was worth it to sacrifice the thralls to fix the nightmare curse.
Yeah, I never said it was pleasant. Or nice. But if he had his way, he'd find the right numbers to make it so. Perhaps. (Of course he'd have to propose it and it would never get approval from the Silver Court, but Xenk can dream.) ]
